Introduction to Horticulture @ Kew
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, invites you to join us for your first steps towards an exciting and fulfilling career in Horticulture.
Duration
This role is being offered as part of a positive action programme on the basis of ethnicity and socio-economic background. Horticulture is under-represented by people who are Asian, Black, Mixed Heritage or other backgrounds and our Gardens Directorate is underrepresented by individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
Salary: £12,788
Entry requirements: Candidates must be 18 years or over, be physically fit and have an enthusiasm for working outdoors. Should be IT literate and be able to communicate written & verbally in English. Candidates should not have any prior horticultural experience or qualifications
Hours of work: Full time, Monday to Friday
Practical Placements
You will be undertaking three two-month placements where you will gain knowledge and hands-on practical skills working alongside friendly, experienced staff at Kew Gardens.
You will gain experience in various parts of Kew Gardens, including the formal gardens, arboretum and public glasshouses. Kew is one of the world’s leading botanic gardens, famous for its amazing living plant collections.
Study Days at College
Students will enhance their horticultural skills by undertaking a day release course at Capel Manor College, achieving a Level 1 horticultural qualification.
This course will give you an introduction into the horticultural industry, providing you with additional knowledge and the opportunity to gain further practical skills.

Once you have successfully completed the course, you will have the experience and knowledge to apply for many horticultural apprenticeships around the UK including Kew’s own Apprenticeship or a further education course in horticulture or employment.
