Make the most of the unexpected joys of winter at Wakehurst.

Our guide to the best things to do this winter at Wakehurst is all you need for the perfect day out, from our magical lantern trail to a peaceful wellbeing stroll through the woods. Reconnect with nature on a solo adventure, reconnect with loved ones for a family day out, or reconnect with your senses in the colourful Winter Garden.

2. Explore the Winter Garden

Stroll through a sensory haven of winding pathways and towering birches, in a garden especially designed to be enjoyed in winter.

Look out for the bright colours of dogwood and cyclamen, and breathe in the sweet scents of witch hazel as the wind rustles through swathes of grasses.

Since first opening in 2019, the Winter Garden has continued evolving and become a firm visitor favourite through the winter months. Though beautiful throughout the year, winter is the best time to step into this tapestry of colour and texture.

3. Say hello to our new arrivals

Every winter, Wakehurst becomes the seasonal home to Galloway cattle and Hebridean sheep.

They visit from nearby Ashdown Forest as their usual food of purple moor grass is dormant during the colder months.

Meanwhile, Wakehurst's fields are bursting with tasty herb-rich grass, making them the perfect place for the animals to take a holiday break.

But they need to earn their keep! The light-footed Hebridean sheep gently tread seed into the soil, opening up the grassland to allow light in. It's a process which is impossible to replicate with a machine.

The furry friends regularly move around the site, so keep an eye out on your next visit.
